Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
